Cynthia Hung-Confirm
Taiwan

About CynthiaOn a cold and gloomy night in London, England, Cynthia found herself inside the warmth and exuberance of Bar Salsa. This was her first exposure to Salsa, and it instantly changed her entire career path. In the brief years that followed, she successfully created the Salsa Taiwan Association and a Dance Dimensions Inc., handling multiple dance studios nationwide to help spread her love for Salsa. Simply, Cynthia dances for the joy and effervescent sensations of Salsa; never inhibited nor hindered by binding to strict "rules", she dances for pure contentment rather than sport, performance, or competition. Thus, this is the ideology and way that she hopes to introduce Salsa to the Taiwanese public. Her continuing efforts, travels, and visits to the World's most prestigious Salsa Congresses and instructors will no doubt benefit the ever growing Salsa community in Taiwan.

Antonio Vargas
Casablanca
The Aussie maestro who appeared in the film Strictly Ballroom

“Vargas (…): his lunges cocked tight like a drawn bow, his crossover footwork sewn like perfect stitches, his turns knife-edge smooth.”

Washington DC: Washington Post, Oct 1 2002

Antonio Vargas is the embodiment of the masculine principle, exhibiting the self-control of the virtuoso flamenco dancer. (…) he dances with such volcanic energy (...); (his) fancy footwork (…) is an education.”
Dunedin: Listener, Apr 6 2002

“Riveting flamenco (…)
An intensely focused performer, (Vargas) can make even minimal movement more expressive than text. (…) a triumph of acting as much it is of dancing.”
Wellington: The Evening Post, Nov 16 2001

“Flamenco invigorates (…)
Dramatic performance (…) in the modern idiom (…), dance of passion (…).”
Wellington: The Dominion, Nov 16 2001

“Vargas rattles those hills with a bravura macho flourish.”
Sydney: Sydney Morning Herald, Oct 1 2001

"Dance around the altar
Connecting Flamenco (...) with other forms of art is an artistic concern of Antonio Vargas - so that it doesn't degenerate into a touristic attraction."
Munich: Süddeutsche Zeitung, Jul 7 1995

"Love and Power.
Antonio Vargas danced his gipsy-character wonderfully with pride and precision (…).”
Munich: Süddeutsche Zeitung, Oct 24 1994

“Stunning, Spanish sean-nós
A STANDING ovation, cheering and wild clapping, whistling and stomping greeted Antonio Vargas (…)”.
Dublin: Evening Post, Oct 5 1991

"Tale of passion, love, jealousy
Vargas ( ... ) is riveting ( ... ,) wild and fiercing, soft and romantic on demand.”
Dublin: Evening Herald, Oct 5 1993

"Tapping into history. (…) Vargas, as com pelling (...) as he was (...) in the recent hit film Strictly Ballroom (…), a concentrated core of power.”
London: The Times, Aug 24 1994

Vargas is poetry in motion. (…) I watched spellbound as Strictly Ballroom star Antonio Vargas transformed himself into an aggressive, beautiful, sexually compelling god of dance.”
London: Sunday Mail, Apr 25 1993

"This flamenco is strictly live! ( ... ) For one shimmering moment, he is a mirage. A blur of drumming feet and ruffled lace, radiating a staccato clack that resounds around him.”
Melbourne: Herald-Sun, Oct 22 1992

"An absolute Master. ( ... ) If there is such a thing is a charismatic performer then Vargas should he so described. His intensity never flagged and if anything his energy increased with each movement.”
Sydney: Dance Australia, Apr-May 1990

“A taste of the real, raw flamenco.”
Sydney: Sydney Morning Herald, Sep 21 1984

“Flamenco makes those sparks fly.( ... )
Vargas' style is one of force and power (...), he is a master of Zapateado. His intricate interplay of heel and toe taps was a superb virtuoso display of rhythm and percussion."
Sydney: The Australian, Sep 25 1984

Born in Casablanca, Antonio Vargas was attracted to Flamenco at a very early age. His inborn musicality could equally have drawn him to become a percussionist or a concert cellist.

However his passion for the art of Flamenco and the full realisation of its potentials have been the driving force behind his long and brilliant career.

His musical education started when he was only a toddler, and one could say that a career as a musician would have fit his parents' expectations. However, when his family moved to London as he was nine years old, he had the
opportunity not only to continue his musical education, but also to benefit from a myriad of dance teachers and schools, and from being exposed to one of the most eclectic
art scenes in the world. It was like being in the womb of creativity.

Had he been taller, the Flamenco world might have suffered a great tragedy and lost him to ballet; but as fate would have it, his physique did not conform with the ballet masters' specifications, and his teacher advised him to do Spanish Dance. That must have awoken in him recollections of his aunts, both flamenco dancers, and the rest is history. As soon as he could, he escaped to Spain and immersed himself in the mecca of Flamenco, learning with the best teachers in Spain at the time, not only to dance but also to play the Flamenco guitar.

Antonio's was the great generation of flamenco personalities: Antonio Gades, Mario Maya, ElGüito, Cristina Hoyos, Manolete - names that are synonymous with the recent
high profile of flamenco world-wide. His main teacher was Antonio Marín, a one-leg genius who created dancing monsters through his daughters' feet. Soon he had auditioned and been selected when he was only eighteen years old as a member of the Pilar Lopez Company, followed by the Rafael de Cordova Company. With them he toured extensively throughout Europe and South America, and absorbed invaluable information regarding staging, theatre lighting, and artistic direction.

Antonio has always been a pioneer in the field of
Flamenco Dance Theatre. Back in 1962, when he formed his first company, he had already the desire to take Flamenco out of the tight boundaries of the traditional, predictable performances that most audiences were used to; he always believed that Flamenco could lend itself to interpret great novelists and poets and that it could be put
on stage side by side with the most established,
mainstream art-forms, such as opera and
choral works, without jeopardising its authenticity.

The list of Antonio's works is extensive. From opera to
film, from small stage performances to big festivals,
from solo performances to productions with the best
artists that Spain has to offer at the moment, Antonio has
done it all, including a television show with the
Beatles (Granada Television, 1964); he played the Fiddler
in a London production of Fiddler on the Roof (Her
Majesty's Theatre, 1967); he has created his own
Flamenco Dance Theatre works and adapted well known plays and novels to the Flamenco repertoire.

Güpson Pierre-Confirm
Hati / Canada / Singapore

Attitude Dance Studio (ADS) had its humble beginnings in Singapore in 1998. The studio is owned by Artistic Director, Güpson Pierre.

Güpson Pierre is very much responsible for the style of Salsa in Singapore as it is today. He pioneered the Cross Body Style Salsa danced on the count of “1” at a time when most salsa dancers were dancing the Cuban style. From just 20 students in 1998, ADS now has over 3000 students; 6 instructors and 1 Artistic Director; with branches in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Melbourne, Australia. Specialising in Salsa, ADS offers other exciting classes such as Cardio Salsa, Exotic Dance, Afro-Caribbean Dance Movements and more.
